Propagation specialist Mary Lilja will show you how to start your vegetable and other seeds under lights. She’ll demonstrate how to ind clues in seed catalogs that guarantee success! Come early and buy seeds from our racks (or bring some from home) and we will plant them in class! We will give you a seed starting tray and greenhouse cover, and a COUPON FOR 10% OFF SEEDS AND SEED STARTING SUPPLIES that you can use on the day of class or anytime this spring. Ground Preparation and Transplanting Getting your garden space ready for growing: Roto-tilling vs. double digging. Soil amendments, does your garden need them? Fertilizers: what kinds and how to choose. Cool weather crops to seed now and warm weather crops to seed later. How to transplant and seed outdoors.

Chores, Trouble Shooting & Harvesting Daily/weekly/monthly garden maintenance, (cultivating, weeding, fertilizing). Dealing with problems that may arise. When to harvest various crops. The importance of keeping notes.

FAVORITE VEGETABLE AND HERB SEED AND PLANT VARIETIES
Take the mystery out of choosing which seed to plant. Dave Barnside of Lake Valley/Botanical Interest Seed Companies will discuss varieties he has found to be best suited to our area. Which varieties are best from seed? Seed starting indoors. What seeds to start early, which ones later? Dealing with cold weather. His recommendations are based on his experiences in his large home garden. He and his family grow and preserve a large percentage of their food. A great class for beginners.

WALLS AND WALKWAYS
Hardscape specialist, Jess Richardson, will take you through the planning process of building retaining walls, walkways and patios from native and exotic stone. He will demonstrate how to level the area and it the stone. Class will be outdoors so come prepared with a jacket, hat and gloves! COMPOSTING FOR THE HEALTH OF THE EARTH
The process of composting allows individuals to use on-site organic materials to create nature’s healthiest soil amendment. This class, taught by graduates of the Denver Master Composter Program, sponsored by Denver Urban Gardens and Denver Recycles, will teach participants easy ways to create and manage a compost system that will allow you to use less water, decrease or eliminate the usage of pesticides, yet lead to conditions that promote healthy gardens and healthy people. Thought about being a beekeeper but don’t know how to get started? Gwen keeps several hives at Timberline Gardens. GARDENING WITH DESERT CACTI, AGAVES AND YUCCA RELATIVES

Every year in early June the cactus arboretum at Timberline Gardens explodes into blossom. The dozens of cacti species put all their energy into this grand display.
